#freenode channel featuring siska, ryonaloli, kkarlz, Speiros, setham, TimurTheLame, and 8 others.

ilbelkyr 2017-02-26 18:48:15
irinix, as for bandwidth: not sure it is public, but if you nicely ask staff they might give you a ballpark figure
gry 2017-02-26 18:48:16
setham: yes, i think so. take it easy, there's doing to be plenty of staff around within the next 12 hours or so :)
irinix 2017-02-26 18:48:32
ilbelkyr, well, bandwidth could be estimated
setham 2017-02-26 18:49:15
txs
irinix 2017-02-26 18:50:02
by taking an average message length, in characters, across a significant sample size of channels, then calculating the number of bytes per message, then measuring server-server messages, by using stats m
irinix 2017-02-26 18:51:18
and then multiplying those values by an average messages per second across, again, a significant sample of channels and servers
irinix 2017-02-26 18:51:27
and that would surely get you in the ball park
ilbelkyr 2017-02-26 18:51:54
you could do that but i feel like it would be easier to just ask :o
irinix 2017-02-26 18:52:36
ilbelkyr, oh, I would ask as well, just to confirm my estimation.
irinix 2017-02-26 18:53:30
wait, how many bytes per char?
amnet 2017-02-26 18:53:47
Depends on the character set.
irinix 2017-02-26 18:53:50
isn't it 8 in UTF 8?
amnet 2017-02-26 18:54:12
I mean, character set AND encoding scheme.
amnet 2017-02-26 18:54:26
No.
irinix 2017-02-26 18:54:47
utf 8 is between 8 and 32 bits
irinix 2017-02-26 18:54:53
so 1 - 4 bytes.
irinix 2017-02-26 18:55:46
* utf-* (Not utf-8)
irinix 2017-02-26 18:55:51
I missed the shift key.
gry 2017-02-26 18:56:55
ryonaloli: the ##windows channel mission had been help windows users gain technical insight and help them learn foss world. i think that's why they chose freenode as their home.
gry 2017-02-26 18:57:03
ryonaloli: it is on their website.
ryonaloli 2017-02-26 18:57:34
huh. well it turned into a windows tech support channel, unfortunately.
ryonaloli 2017-02-26 18:57:53
least it had an original purpose
starrify 2017-02-26 19:12:30
lol
starrify 2017-02-26 19:12:38
how many variations does that bot have i wonder
starrify 2017-02-26 19:12:42
(of that sentence)
irinix 2017-02-26 19:12:58
Many
irinix 2017-02-26 19:13:07
and it constantly picks up new nouns.
starrify 2017-02-26 19:13:21
i wonder where it's getting that from
irinix 2017-02-26 19:13:25
I don't know how he taught it noun recognition, but I respect the skill that took.
irinix 2017-02-26 19:13:51
starrify, last time I saw it, it would take nouns from live conversations, and inject them for
irinix 2017-02-26 19:14:17
I guess an easy way to do it would keep a dictionary file with each word's part of speech
irinix 2017-02-26 19:14:43
though I'm certain that that would be the inefficient, but easy way of doing it.
starrify 2017-02-26 19:25:38
i complain a lot too
irinix 2017-02-26 19:30:29
Of course if somebody issues the >morse command, it annoys me back with BEEP(Length, freq)
irinix 2017-02-26 19:30:43
so, I try not to troll it, and only use it as a joke
irinix 2017-02-26 19:31:29
because when my PC goes bee bee bee beep beep beep bee bee bee all night long, because I spammed a channel with morse, I lose sleep.
starrify 2017-02-26 19:32:48
i see. interesting
starrify 2017-02-26 19:33:00
i wish i learned morse code but i don't know when i'd ever use it
kkarlz 2017-02-26 19:33:21
dunno if someone uses still those
amnet 2017-02-26 19:33:34
Just learn SOS.
irinix 2017-02-26 19:34:44
I think I should write an IRC Client called IRCAnnoy, which has random annoying features like that, so that way you can play games with other IRC users
kkarlz 2017-02-26 19:35:14
so do they beep the SOS amnet
amnet 2017-02-26 19:35:14
Call it TwIRC.
irinix 2017-02-26 19:35:30
TwIRC?
irinix 2017-02-26 19:35:42
The worst Internet Relay Chat?
amnet 2017-02-26 19:35:57
…Yes.
kkarlz 2017-02-26 19:35:57
hahaha
kkarlz 2017-02-26 19:36:00
nice...
kkarlz 2017-02-26 19:36:08
that would do
irinix 2017-02-26 19:39:16
kkarlz, nice! Lol
kkarlz 2017-02-26 19:39:17
is there any other?
kkarlz 2017-02-26 19:39:24
old school dude
amnet 2017-02-26 19:39:30
irinix: No, let them write the plugins.
irinix 2017-02-26 19:39:48
Once I get the python script written and working, I'll open my code up to you, so you can translate it to mIRC
irinix 2017-02-26 19:39:59
(Of course it will be open source)
ZikZak 2017-02-26 19:40:46
Interesting that the age-old freenode mantra of "don't op up unless you have to" no longer applies. Just like every other network eveyone is opped. Tee hee.
siska 2017-02-26 19:40:50
someone's has been trying to sasl auth for my nick for months now, keep getting spammed with failed to login to siska. - always from the same ip
amnet 2017-02-26 19:40:52
Peer-directed annoyance.
amnet 2017-02-26 19:40:58
What could go wrong?
siska 2017-02-26 19:41:08
would it be possible to track down this user? i don't want to ignore saslserv alltogether
amnet 2017-02-26 19:41:26
ZikZak: The moral of the story is that you have to.
siska 2017-02-26 19:41:26
or atleast can that ip or something :p
ZikZak 2017-02-26 19:41:29
siska: You'll have to learn to take it and like it ;)
siska 2017-02-26 19:41:42
nah i like it on top
ZikZak 2017-02-26 19:43:15
amnet: Not with the way the curent ircd is set up. IMO it's a failing of mentality. Incredibly hypocritical.
amnet 2017-02-26 20:03:23
ryonaloli: Anonymizing enhancements to Tor don't make *Tor* anonymizing.
ryonaloli 2017-02-26 20:03:50
whether or not your isp knows you are using tor has nothing to do with anonymity, you realize.
irinix 2017-02-26 20:03:54
At the end of every fiscal year, The Alliance would share the profits with it's members based on both their utilization and contributions to the Shared Inventory system.
ryonaloli 2017-02-26 20:03:59
that is a separate issue related to opsec.
Speiros 2017-02-26 20:04:08
gry Thanks man. That website link was perfect.
veek 2017-02-26 20:04:11
/msg nickserv info Lgue says Lgue is not registered.
amnet 2017-02-26 20:04:12
ryonaloli: Your ISP is _where_ your anonymity ends.
ryonaloli 2017-02-26 20:04:15
even if tor sent "Tor user" in every packet, it would still provide identical levels of anonymity.
Speiros 2017-02-26 20:04:31
Oh, I think he's gone.
ryonaloli 2017-02-26 20:04:35
amnet: that is not how network anonymity works. i suggest you read some papers on http://freehaven.net/anonbib/
irinix 2017-02-26 20:04:45
amnet, would you join a network like that ?
amnet 2017-02-26 20:05:00
ryonaloli: I don't care about private definitions of anonymity.
ryonaloli 2017-02-26 20:05:11
these are universal definitions, they are not private.
amnet 2017-02-26 20:05:21
irinix: I didn't read all that.
irinix 2017-02-26 20:05:43
sorry, I was proselytizing.
amnet 2017-02-26 20:05:45
ryonaloli: Private meaning "deviates from common language."
ryonaloli 2017-02-26 20:22:01
after all, you did not use the textbook definition of anonymity. :P
amnet 2017-02-26 20:22:01
I said "sole" above but you responded as if we weren't on the same page knowledge-wise,
ryonaloli 2017-02-26 20:22:29
apparently we aren't, because it is not the sole factor.
amnet 2017-02-26 20:22:31
I used the dictionary definition.
amnet 2017-02-26 20:22:43
Not a textbook, but certainly a better source on meaning.
irinix 2017-02-26 20:23:01
I believe agreed upon definitions within the terms of the law, what I don't agree with is such precise archaic language being used to define the laws.
amnet 2017-02-26 20:23:12
ryonaloli: Oh, let me be a *bit* more precise.
ryonaloli 2017-02-26 20:23:15
you may have used *a* definition, used for casual conversation. it is as if you got into a conversation about evolution with a biologist, and used the word "theory" to mean guess.
irinix 2017-02-26 20:23:38
I think the best way I could describe how I feel would be "The Formal Common Tongue"
amnet 2017-02-26 20:23:48
You assumed that were weren't on a par in terms of our understanding of linguistics && that I was at a lesser degree of understanding.
ryonaloli 2017-02-26 20:24:55
TimurTheLame: there are currently no staff online (see: /stats p)
amnet 2017-02-26 20:24:56
ryonaloli: Hmmmmmmmmmm.
ryonaloli 2017-02-26 20:24:57
unfortunately
irinix 2017-02-26 20:25:06
and I probably just entered some FBI Database, again, because of that revolutionary wall of text.
TimurTheLame 2017-02-26 20:25:14
:D
amnet 2017-02-26 20:25:26
ryonaloli: Are you saying you're cognizant of the possibility that I might have a more advanced understanding of linguistics?
ryonaloli 2017-02-26 20:25:44
amnet: of course. for all i know, it may be your profession.
amnet 2017-02-26 20:26:02
Right, then it was my assumption. Sorry.
liste 2017-02-26 20:26:08
TimurTheLame: cloaks don't hide your ip, see https://freenode.net/kb/answer/cloaks
ryonaloli 2017-02-26 20:26:33
in my experience, and in my profession, i see the "common tongue" causing severe problems, whereas using technical language is far more appriate, even for teaching the lay person. teaching a person what opsec is isn't hard.
amnet 2017-02-26 20:26:34
irinix: NSA*
TimurTheLame 2017-02-26 20:26:44
liste: I use SASL, don't use webchat
ryonaloli 2017-02-26 20:27:23
you don't need to teach someone comsec, persec, sigsec, netsec, physec, appsec, transec, infosec, and every single part of C4ISTAREW just to understand the basics of what "good opsec" is
irinix 2017-02-26 20:27:23
having a bouncer does though
liste 2017-02-26 20:27:30
TimurTheLame: also: "Due to the nature of IRC services, there are some tricks which can cause services to reveal a cloaked user's IP/hostname."
amnet 2017-02-26 20:27:39
ryonaloli: Neglecting to mention the fact that the ISP can give out private information about its users under certain conditions is a non-trivial misunderstanding.
TimurTheLame 2017-02-26 20:27:44
liste: better than nothing
ryonaloli 2017-02-26 20:28:10
amnet: i never neglected to mention that, it was just not relevant.
TimurTheLame 2017-02-26 20:28:30
liste: dissuade the less technically-inclined from attacking me or doing something to me if they have a grudge against me for whatever reason
amnet 2017-02-26 20:28:33
It is though.
irinix 2017-02-26 20:28:34
Oh No!
ryonaloli 2017-02-26 20:28:36
in the conversation, if someone uses tor with an obfsproxy bridge, all an isp can give away is "this person is connecting to an ip, doing something, no idea what"
irinix 2017-02-26 20:28:38
I missed a Grey's!
ryonaloli 2017-02-26 20:28:46
you can use FTE, which can make it look like skype calls
amnet 2017-02-26 20:28:49
Not everyone lives in a country that has sane privacy practices.
amnet 2017-02-26 20:28:55
Nor can we rely on them.
ryonaloli 2017-02-26 20:28:56
so your isp will give out "this person is connecting to a skype ip"
TimurTheLame 2017-02-26 20:29:12
Anyway, I'll just wait for it
amnet 2017-02-26 20:29:44
ryonaloli: Right, and I'm saying the anonymizing agent is those third party obfuscation techniques.
ryonaloli 2017-02-26 20:30:04
they are developed by tor project, and are not third party.
