Speiros: it's used for asking the ircd which of the nicks passed to it are online; kinda like whoising each nick by hand, but without whois
gry 2017-02-26 17:06:07
Speiros: so if you want to keep track of when i am online and when i am not, i can add you to a nice list, and my irc client would ask freenode whether you're online or not every few mins
gry 2017-02-26 17:06:07
Speiros: when your online status changes, my irc client would show me a notification
gry 2017-02-26 17:06:07
Speiros: i believe that's its primary purpose
Speiros 2017-02-26 17:06:07
gry Aaah...so like the friend list? I keep getting a friendlist response every time I do it with my own name.
gry 2017-02-26 17:06:07
yes that's why
Speiros 2017-02-26 17:06:07
Thanks man:) gry, makes good sense now.
gry 2017-02-26 17:06:07
although i think your client is probably doing something stupid; it's not supposed to return the entire friendlist, only a reply regarding the nicks you passed to it
Speiros 2017-02-26 17:06:23
Yeah, I only have one person on it, but at the same time, when I query them, it shows nothing (mind you, in a list with other true and false nics).
Speiros 2017-02-26 17:06:50
It only shows up when I query myself
Speiros 2017-02-26 17:06:55
lol
Speiros 2017-02-26 17:07:01
I guess I'm good at talking to myself
gry 2017-02-26 17:07:09
well, freenode sends you *something* for each ison query. the list of nicks it returns is empty only if everyone from your supplied list is offline
Speiros 2017-02-26 17:07:43
How strange is that...Okay.
gry 2017-02-26 17:07:53
precisely what command did you run? "/quote ison Speiros" returns me your nick, because you're online
gry 2017-02-26 17:08:04
in telnet
gry 2017-02-26 17:08:16
in an irc client, it returns me the complete friend list, because the irc client is silly
Speiros 2017-02-26 17:08:31
I see.
Speiros 2017-02-26 17:09:03
I used a few, but it was also /quote ison Speiros...let me try one in here, and I'll use my name, your name and an imaginary one.
Speiros 2017-02-26 17:10:05
Yeah, all I get is that the person on my friendlist is firstly offline, and then online, with their whois. gry As for me and you, it didn't mention us.
gry 2017-02-26 17:10:20
add the colon
Speiros 2017-02-26 17:10:26
Oops, yep.
gry 2017-02-26 17:11:10
although for me in telnet, "ison gry speiros" also returns us both, so the behaviour you're describing sounds unusual
Speiros 2017-02-26 17:11:10
This is the exact command, and I got the same response with a space instead of a colon. "/quote ison Speiros:gry:ZzzlLl"
gry 2017-02-26 17:11:19
you should space separate the nicks
Speiros 2017-02-26 17:11:46
And the colon goes just before the next name, after the space, or before it?
