#freenode channel featuring swarfega, barq, kline, Fuchs, {0}_{0}, Agamus, and 8 others.

MetaNova 2017-02-21 02:45:59
Agamus: this is going to sound much more crass than I intend it to, but: no, I don't, since I use standalone clients to connect. is there a reason why you must use the webchat to connect?
barq 2017-02-21 02:46:12
Some allah spammer in my channel, no ops around, can someone please take care of this?
Agamus 2017-02-21 02:46:18
We have port 194 blocked here for whatever reason.
Agamus 2017-02-21 02:46:49
So I have to use the webclient. I would very much rather not, but alas. And yet, that capcha has been a thorn in my side for over a year
MetaNova 2017-02-21 02:47:04
you could always use a bouncer
Agamus 2017-02-21 02:48:00
Hmmm - I'll have to look into that
kline 2017-02-21 02:48:40
Agamus, we listen on a number of ports, including ssl: https://freenode.net/kb/answer/chat
kline 2017-02-21 02:48:56
you might have more luck with 6697 / 7070
MetaNova 2017-02-21 02:48:59
Agamus: http://znc.in ; you can host it and run it yourself, from your home or a server you rent/own, or use one of the many free znc hosting providers, http://wiki.znc.in/Providers
MetaNova 2017-02-21 02:49:16
kline: does freenode even listen on 194?
kline 2017-02-21 02:49:23
MetaNova, no
kline 2017-02-21 02:49:33
which could be part of the problem
kline 2017-02-21 02:49:44
but just trying those other ports might make worrying about that irrelevanr
MetaNova 2017-02-21 02:51:30
if freenode doesn't even listen on port 194, then would it really matter if the port is blocked at their location? or, what's more, could they think that port 194 is blocked because freenode doesn't listen on it, to begin with?
MetaNova 2017-02-21 02:51:50
trying other ports is a great suggestion, though
swarfega 2017-02-21 02:52:25
using a web client is more descrete from work/college though
MetaNova 2017-02-21 02:54:26
I find it a bit difficult to consider the webchat any more discrete than a regular client
swarfega 2017-02-21 02:54:44
well its less obvious and you dont have to close a software client down
MetaNova 2017-02-21 02:55:02
unless you're talking about accessing freenode from public workstations, where you don't want to use / can't use a flash drive, where you might otherwise just keep your client
swarfega 2017-02-21 02:55:21
ircing in an open office for instance
MetaNova 2017-02-21 02:55:38
you still have to close your browser/end your session, and it's still a scrolling screen of text, which is obviously a chat window
swarfega 2017-02-21 02:55:49
at least a tab would be one of many
MetaNova 2017-02-21 02:56:06
and a task bar button is one of many
swarfega 2017-02-21 02:56:28
i still maintain tabs are more descrete
MetaNova 2017-02-21 02:57:02
I consider that largely a placebo
MetaNova 2017-02-21 02:57:22
but I'm not going to tell you not to use it, it certainly has its usefulness
swarfega 2017-02-21 02:57:42
software has its own icon on the taskbar whereas a tab is less obvious
MetaNova 2017-02-21 02:58:29
swarfega: task bars can be hidden, or resized, and clients can outright minimize to the system tray
swarfega 2017-02-21 02:58:59
if you start hiding taskbars or doing something less typical than the work place is used to, youl soon get found out
u_u 2017-02-21 02:59:39
ass
swarfega 2017-02-21 02:59:48
i once changed the screen res on a work computer and their bespoke software stopped working, they had to call IT lol
MetaNova 2017-02-21 02:59:56
uhm, if you're going to get 'found out' with the critical clue being your task bar being set to auto-hide, then how do you actually expect to get away with having a chat window up, open, and reading it?
MetaNova 2017-02-21 03:00:17
sounds like a bunch of folly to me
swarfega 2017-02-21 03:00:39
well obviously you read it when you think you're not being looked at
MetaNova 2017-02-21 03:01:06
well then obviously you just have the client minimized when you think you're being looked at
swarfega 2017-02-21 03:01:16
exactly
MetaNova 2017-02-21 03:01:31
right, which means, you still aren't making any sense :P
swarfega 2017-02-21 03:01:43
to you maybe
MetaNova 2017-02-21 03:02:50
besides, if you have to take precautions to hide your use of IRC from someone (or anyone) that might reprimand you, or otherwise get you in trouble, then perhaps you shouldn't be using IRC in the first place
MetaNova 2017-02-21 03:02:57
and actually be doing what you're supposed to be
swarfega 2017-02-21 03:03:09
indeed i dont support ircing from work at all
swarfega 2017-02-21 03:03:22
but some people do
swarfega 2017-02-21 03:03:32
ive even seen people host irc clients on their email server
