hey, I have a question re #bulletphysics which seems to have been abandoned by it's original founder. it's a channel about a software lib and the channel topic mentions an ancient version. is there any way to transfer control to someone of the active users?
JayFoxRox 2017-01-30 07:46:24
according to chanserv "freenode-staff" is the founder, it was founded in 2007 and last used in nov 2013

JayFoxRox, do you represent the bullet project in some capacity?
Kartoffel 2017-01-30 07:54:57
Any group management staff here?
Kartoffel 2017-01-30 07:54:57
Juerd put in a request to get #sha2017-badge registered, any news on that?
JayFoxRox 2017-01-30 07:56:40
kline: nope, I only occasionally visit the channel if I need help with the lib - but the title always bugs me and it's also very apparent that the channel has been abandoned (possibly scaring users away). I'll probably create an issue at github about this.
JayFoxRox 2017-01-30 07:56:40
the channel used to be OP'd by erwin couman who also maintains the lib, however, feels like he abandoned IRC in favour of other protocols. I think it's very reasonable to hand control over to some of the recent idlers (not me, but StephenLynx volunteered and others might do too). For now I just want to know if this is possible and how to approach this situation.
root____1 2017-01-30 07:57:56
anybody around?
JayFoxRox 2017-01-30 07:58:05

are all of the bodies wired up getting math shadows piped into minds?
root____1 2017-01-30 07:59:36
shangul: hitron?
kline 2017-01-30 07:59:45
JayFoxRox, single-# channels are reserved for official project representation, if it ended up needing people to manage it outside of that we'd move you into ##bulletphysics
kline 2017-01-30 08:00:07
but if the project maintainer wants to come back, we can help getting #bulletphysics back up to scratch
JayFoxRox 2017-01-30 08:01:57
kline: okies, I'll open an issue at github and discuss adding more OPs to represent the project (as the founder doesn't seem to use IRC)
JayFoxRox 2017-01-30 08:02:20
thanks :)

Kartoffel, ill chase it up. i think something we were wondering about was whether -badge needed its own group, or if there should be a general sha group that covers it all

can I get an unaffiliated cloak please?

kline 2017-01-30 08:06:24
root____1, anything we can help with?
Kartoffel 2017-01-30 08:06:30
kline: all of the sha2017-[name] channels are separate subteams, they each have different team leads. I am the badge lead
root____1 2017-01-30 08:06:52
kline: can we secure my right to travel?
kline 2017-01-30 08:06:57
Kartoffel, thats fine, we can handle that as part of the group process
kline 2017-01-30 08:07:03
root____1, not in this channel, no
kline 2017-01-30 08:07:24
Kartoffel, who decides who heads up each team, for example?
Gorch50 2017-01-30 08:07:38
could I please have a unaffiliated cloak?
Cirrus_Minor 2017-01-30 08:08:18
thing is since last few builds when i open a new tab i see like some kinda dialoghe window appear then quickly dissapear, with no time to determine what it was, it shows in left upper side
Kartoffel 2017-01-30 08:08:21

root____1 2017-01-30 08:09:57
what do I need microsoft windows for traveling?
kline 2017-01-30 08:10:39
Kartoffel, im not on the groups team, but i suspect they dont want to end up registering and helping 27 groups every year just for sha, so having some sort of hierarchy is probably useful. in any case, ill bug them to look at it
root____1 2017-01-30 08:10:49
gentoo says this has bogus certificates
Kartoffel 2017-01-30 08:11:09
kline: thanks. Most channels were registered from the start and don't need any assistance. We just lost ops before we got a chance to do it
kline 2017-01-30 08:11:09
root____1, do you have any questions related to the freenode network/
root____1 2017-01-30 08:12:03
kline: what is it running these days, debian?
kline 2017-01-30 08:12:51
root____1, yes, we run debian for our irc hosts
ladyfriday 2017-01-30 08:13:19
there's a user in a channel I'm an op for who's having some connection issues, so keep quitting/joining... is there something less harsh than a ban that I can do so their joining/quitting doesn't cause so much noise?
Gorch50 2017-01-30 08:13:21
kline thanks
sud0 2017-01-30 08:13:59
install gentoo, kline
kline 2017-01-30 08:14:04
ladyfriday, banforward to ##fix_your_connection, then unset it in 12h or something, or when they come back to you
kline 2017-01-30 08:14:26
sud0, i have gentoo installed elsewhere, thanks, but i dont think we need it for freenodes servers
sud0 2017-01-30 08:14:36
nice
kline 2017-01-30 08:15:01
ladyfriday, `/mode #channel +b some!user@here$##fix_your_connection` should do it

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask, but there was a fedora ama some days ago, and I was told there would be a blog post on freenode.net, with all the questions and answers later. I've been checking the blog, and no such post has been done yet. Are there still plans to make one?
kline 2017-01-30 08:18:11
eor, im sure there will be one, yes
eor 2017-01-30 08:18:42
kline, thanks.
Evidlo 2017-01-30 08:33:27
Is there any documentation on how to ban someone? All I can find is information about modes, not how to actually apply them
genec 2017-01-30 08:34:00
Evidlo: /mode ##mychannelname +b $expression
desgen 2017-01-30 08:34:15
Sexpression
Evidlo 2017-01-30 08:34:38
and can $expression just be their nick?
genec 2017-01-30 08:34:39
Evidlo: are you looking to ban a nick name, a source IP, a NickServ account?
Evidlo 2017-01-30 08:34:45
just a nick ban
genec 2017-01-30 08:34:47
Evidlo: $a:accountName
genec 2017-01-30 08:35:06
if it's a NickServ account. the nickname need not be their account name
Evidlo 2017-01-30 08:36:24
so `/mode #chan +b $a:foobar_nick` ?
genec 2017-01-30 08:36:40
Evidlo: no, not nick, NickServ account name.
Evidlo 2017-01-30 08:36:56
I don't understand the distinction
MetaNova 2017-01-30 08:37:19
Evidlo: when you register with nickserv, the nick you were using at the time becomes your account name
Joseph 2017-01-30 08:37:23
Evidlo: your accountname is usually the nickname you used to register on freenode, your nickname is what your current nickname is
MetaNova 2017-01-30 08:37:43
you can /nick to something else later, and still identify to that account, by name, even though you're not presently /nick'd to it
Joseph 2017-01-30 08:37:46
Evidlo: for example, my accountname is Penskins, but my (grouped) nickname is Joseph
genec 2017-01-30 08:37:53
Evidlo: if you "/whois nick", and the person is identified, it'll show their account name. if you'd like, I can show you how.
Evidlo 2017-01-30 08:38:13
so for most people, its probably just their nick
Evidlo 2017-01-30 08:38:31
does it have to include the `~` and the cloak/hostname?
genec 2017-01-30 08:38:52
no, that's part of their displayed name
Joseph 2017-01-30 08:39:03
Evidlo: no. just the actual accountname itself. if you wanted to ban me, for example, you'd do "/mode #channel +b $a:Penskins"
Evidlo 2017-01-30 08:39:38
cool
m0rter0_ 2017-01-30 08:44:07
i need to apply to a symposium and they are asking me which is my preffered affiliation. I'm not english native speaker, but I guess that they are asking where i'll be staying? can anyone confirm this ?
MetaNova 2017-01-30 08:45:04
m0rter0_: no, which group/organization you're part of
