Hi How can I make a room?
fwilson 2017-01-28 19:33:28
when you /join a channel that doesn't already exist, it is created -- so just do something like /join ##mychannel
ExpertListener95 2017-01-28 19:33:38
thx
fwilson 2017-01-28 19:33:47
(if you represent an on-topic project, feel free to just use #channel, but it is freenode policy to use channel names starting with ## for any other use)
ExpertListener95 2017-01-28 19:33:54
Will I be assigned the admin of that channel automatically?
fwilson 2017-01-28 19:34:02
no, you will need to register it with /msg chanserv help register
fwilson 2017-01-28 19:34:20
er, that'll give you help on registering, not actually register the channel of course <_< sorry if that was ambiguous
ExpertListener95 2017-01-28 19:34:30
No worries at all
ExpertListener95 2017-01-28 19:34:38
I really appreciate the info!
ExpertListener95 2017-01-28 19:34:46
I've been searching google all night
fwilson 2017-01-28 19:34:57
hehe, google isn't always helpful for network-specific stuff like this :P
fwilson 2017-01-28 19:35:02
but that's what this channel is here for!
ExpertListener95 2017-01-28 19:35:18
I've come to absolutely love freenode
fwilson 2017-01-28 19:35:19
there's also https://freenode.net/kb/all which covers a lot
ExpertListener95 2017-01-28 19:35:29
When I get paid, I'm def making a donation
fwilson 2017-01-28 19:35:55
freenode actually doesn't usually accept donations, believe it or not
fwilson 2017-01-28 19:36:02
the parent organization (the PDPC) was dissolved a while ago
fwilson 2017-01-28 19:36:20
so now it's usually just server sponsorships (which are usually done by large organizations) that are accepted
ExpertListener95 2017-01-28 19:36:37
Oh wow! Didn't know that either
ExpertListener95 2017-01-28 19:36:54
Unforuntately I don't have the knowledge or time to manage a server :\
fwilson 2017-01-28 19:37:47
if you work for an organization that you think would be interested in sponsoring one you can/should definitely encourage them to get in touch
OMDPrebel 2017-01-28 19:37:52
And how much does a Server sponsorship cost yearly?
fwilson 2017-01-28 19:38:23
usually there's not much server management involved -- iirc, the freenode infra team manages everything actually on the machine
ExpertListener95 2017-01-28 19:38:23
I actually do, I'll meet with the owner in the next month or two and discuss it with him.
fwilson 2017-01-28 19:38:35
the big thing is providing reliable power/network/etc
fwilson 2017-01-28 19:39:15
here's some information about it https://freenode.net/support
fwilson 2017-01-28 19:39:35
OMDPrebel: it varies depending on the organization doing it
OMDPrebel 2017-01-28 19:39:55
ballpark figure?
ExpertListener95 2017-01-28 19:40:01
Woo hoo! I got my channel created and registered :D
fwilson 2017-01-28 19:40:24
if the supporting infrastructure is already in place and there's just some unused capacity it might actually come close to $0 (although don't quote me on that)
OMDPrebel 2017-01-28 19:41:26
Shucks, because I would really like to quote you on $0, :P
OMDPrebel 2017-01-28 19:41:47
I'll read the support page
fwilson 2017-01-28 19:42:09
yeah, the support page covers the general requirements and that sort of things, which you can probably use to get a reasonable estimate for your environment
fwilson 2017-01-28 19:42:57
really the big thing is the attack risk -- sometimes freenode is hit by dos/ddos attacks, and an organization's server/network could get caught up in that
F3n|x 2017-01-28 19:43:12
eh kline wassap ;(
F3n|x 2017-01-28 19:43:42
yes thats true but not very large
F3n|x 2017-01-28 19:44:01
i meant, large on potency but short on time
fwilson 2017-01-28 19:44:24
ah yeah, that can still be a big deal for organizations that aren't prepared to mitigate it
