#freenode channel featuring duckgoose, gry, raccoon, Atro, up2late, mst, and 10 others.

Nerdmind 2017-01-29 09:45:27
So, I only use +e ?
raccoon 2017-01-29 09:45:47
that's one option yes
Nerdmind 2017-01-29 09:45:54
OK.
raccoon 2017-01-29 09:45:59
exempts them from FLAG +b and RESTRICTED
raccoon 2017-01-29 09:46:37
most people would probably use +v or +vV
up2late 2017-01-29 09:46:40
how do i add someone to get autoopped when they join my channel?
raccoon 2017-01-29 09:47:02
up2late: FLAG +oO
raccoon 2017-01-29 09:47:07
up2late: auto-ops are discouraged on freenode
up2late 2017-01-29 09:47:42
so /msg chanserv add #channel +oO user?
raccoon 2017-01-29 09:47:54
FLAGS #channel user +oO
up2late 2017-01-29 09:48:02
kk thanks
kline 2017-01-29 09:48:47
up2late, its worth reiterating that auto-op is discouraged on freenode
kline 2017-01-29 09:48:58
is there something you specifically need it for?
up2late 2017-01-29 09:49:50
to op a user when im not around
up2late 2017-01-29 09:50:05
instead of hacing him msg chanserv every time
up2late 2017-01-29 09:50:08
having
thumbs 2017-01-29 09:50:25
up2late: what's wrong with having to /msg ChanServ when needed?
raccoon 2017-01-29 09:50:30
up2late: how do your other non-opped users feel about that op "lording over them" all the time? intimidating, i bet.
up2late 2017-01-29 09:50:31
but if its dicouraged, ill just manually do it then
raccoon 2017-01-29 09:50:50
kinda like kline does in here
up2late 2017-01-29 09:51:07
its for the devs of the project, so we can get rid fo the people who post illegal stuff for our project
duckgoose 2017-01-29 09:51:13
pls kline raccoon
kline 2017-01-29 09:51:49
up2late, we'd generally ask you simply op up only when you need to do those things
kline 2017-01-29 09:51:54
and then deop when you're done
raccoon 2017-01-29 09:52:17
or set the accomplished devs as +vV so people can recognize and hail them
raccoon 2017-01-29 09:52:28
(or /msg them out on a date)
up2late 2017-01-29 09:52:32
there is only 3 lol
c4757p 2017-01-29 09:53:47
I don't understand 'Displaying these privileges on your nick with a "+o" attracts participants who are interested in gaining them and using them actively; it also attracts the attention of participants who react negatively to authority.'
c4757p 2017-01-29 09:53:54
don't give the former +o, and kick the latter. problem solved
c4757p 2017-01-29 09:54:32
to me it seems valuable to show at a glance who in a channel is an op. they are probably project members who can speak authoritatively, and others may wish to speak directly to them
raccoon 2017-01-29 09:55:00
c4757p: software developers are often anti-authoritarian by nature, and might bring out a hidden rage to shout "F THE POLICE!"
c4757p 2017-01-29 09:55:06
okay
raccoon 2017-01-29 09:55:06
straight from the underground
c4757p 2017-01-29 09:55:09
I have /kick
c4757p 2017-01-29 09:55:11
and +b
c4757p 2017-01-29 09:55:21
deals with troublemakers easily
raccoon 2017-01-29 09:55:31
or, just use psychology so they can coexist and mingle
raccoon 2017-01-29 09:55:40
without having to put a shotgun to their face
c4757p 2017-01-29 09:55:43
an added bonus is that they display their troublemaking tendency early, and get removed, improving the atmosphere after they're gone
raccoon 2017-01-29 09:56:06
see what I did with that one channel that has no bans
c4757p 2017-01-29 09:56:43
I understand that a channel can function without visible ops, I just don't find the argument sufficiently compelling to discourage it network-wide
raccoon 2017-01-29 09:57:14
it's a principled approach. not specifically a policy
c4757p 2017-01-29 09:57:16
hell, the only channel I am an op in on freenode, I don't display ops there, following the convention of the other op before me
c4757p 2017-01-29 09:57:33
it still seems heavy-handed for the network to have an official position on it, even if not a policy
raccoon 2017-01-29 09:57:37
IRC has a history of disruptive ops and disruptive opers, causing more disruption than the users themselves
mst 2017-01-29 09:58:31
I don't see how it's heavy handed for the network to say "this is a thing that is done differently here, and it being done that way has advantages that have been a net benefit to freenode culture and we would like to preserve that"
raccoon 2017-01-29 09:58:48
^
thumbs 2017-01-29 09:58:52
c4757p: it creates an artificial distinction, whereas some users might feel that the op's voice is more important
raccoon 2017-01-29 09:59:31
and a game goal: that in order to prove accomplishment, you must attain op status or your time spent there was worthless
raccoon 2017-01-29 09:59:51
so your regular users get frustrated and leave after a year
c4757p 2017-01-29 09:59:54
thumbs: that's 100% correct, and also 100% doesn't explain why that distinction is a bad thing :)
raccoon 2017-01-29 10:00:56
there are too many channels and networks where the preception is "oh, these people only have ops because they netsex0r each other."
raccoon 2017-01-29 10:01:10
"and they lord it in our faces"
c4757p 2017-01-29 10:01:25
besides, like I said: I understand why an individual channel might want to do this
raccoon 2017-01-29 10:01:27
so, just eliminate that prominence
c4757p 2017-01-29 10:01:55
but the beauty of IRC is in the fact that each channel can develop its own culture, and users can pick channels they like. why pick a favored option across the network?
raccoon 2017-01-29 10:02:06
c4757p: there would be no individual channels doing this if it weren't for a network-wide encouragement and culture
mst 2017-01-29 10:07:33
c4757p: because there is a network wide meta culture too, and that's also important
Narton 2017-01-29 10:17:54
hello, may i have a cloak please?
DocScrutinizer05 2017-01-29 10:17:59

c4757p 2017-01-29 10:18:51

DocScrutinizer05 2017-01-29 10:19:16

DocScrutinizer05 2017-01-29 10:19:26

up2late 2017-01-29 10:24:33
lol
DocScrutinizer05 2017-01-29 10:24:47
I joined late and asked about the topic
up2late 2017-01-29 10:25:09
i asked how to auto op my ops (so when im not around) and they said it was dicouraged
up2late 2017-01-29 10:25:23
i needed ops to control trolls and software pirates
gorch50 2017-01-29 10:25:44
Hello, I would like an unaffiliated cloak.
DocScrutinizer05 2017-01-29 10:29:34

LjL 2017-01-29 10:35:19
